Swimmers from Hailsham Hornets competed in their first gala of the New Year, on Sunday 5th January.

The ‘Splash into 2014’ event was hosted by Littlehampton Swimming Club at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham. The Christmas break did not affect the select squad that took part, everyone swam well improving on their race times. The team collectively acheived 20 top three placings and recorded 19 county qualifying times.

Milly Widdop (10) was on medal winning form throughout the day. Determined swims saw her take the gold in 50m Breaststroke, 100m Individual Medley and 200m Freestyle, in a new personal best time of 2.40.73. Milly also gained silver medals in the 50m Butterfly, Backstroke and Freestyle events. Well done also to ten years olds Maezie Lane and Frankie Lee for attaining five more county times.

Tom Barden (11) put in some brilliant racing performances to finish in silver medal position, in the 100m Individual Medley, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly races.

Congratulations to Alisha Gurr (12) on winning her first open meet medal. Alisha recorded four personal best times and in her last event of the day, 50m Backstroke, she excelled herself to finish third overall in her age group.

Maddie Drury (14) and Craig Steenhoff (31) had 100% success at this competition, both winning all of the events they entered. Maddie gained gold in 50m Butterfly and 200m Freestyle and Craig finished in top spot in all four 50m events.

Cole Cornford (16) swam superbly to finish first place in the 100m Individual Medley, in a county qualifying time of 1.09.76. Cole also came second in 50m Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly events.
