Hailsham Ladies are set to defend their Sussex Plate title after a 3-0 victory against South Saxons 1st XI on Saturday.
Buffeted by high winds, both teams threatened to open scoring early on, but Hailsham struck 10 minutes in after a strong run by Susie Smith found Michelle Page whose strike was saved by the Saxon’s keeper, only for the deflection to be ably swept into goal by Sue Cable.
Smith and Cable both figured in Hailsham’s second goal on twenty minutes, with Smith’s penalty corner strike to right of goal being deflected in by prolific Hailsham striker Cable.
With Michelle Page and Cable constantly harrying the Saxons’ defenders, Lyndsey Horne and Sarah Haird keeping the pressure up in midfield and thunderous 16-yard free hits by Emma Allen, more goal opportunities were presented in the first half, but all were denied by the Saxons’ keeper who showed some fine form.
For the first 10 minutes of the second half, the visitors looked likely to get themselves on the score-sheet, but Abson’s quick reactions kept Hailsham two goals clear.
Cable, Page, Gemma Rham and Rosie Davis all came close to getting a third goal for Hailsham in separate attacks until, on 50 minutes, Davis interception of a Saxons’ 16 yard clearance allowed Rham to dribble the ball along the baseline.
She slipped the ball to un-marked Page who calmly swept the ball into the goal.
Next week sees Hailsham travel to Saxons for the start of the second half of the Sussex Premier League.
