FOUR coaches from Heathfield & Waldron Rugby Club, in preparing for the upcoming season, are the latest to have just completed the new RFU level one course held at Eastbourne College.
Jason Taylor, Neil Burfield, Matt Chambers and Mark Greenlees were among 20 fellow coaches undertaking the two-day course. This is a new level one course from the Rugby Football Union, that focuses on mini rugby coaches. The content includes; using games, fundamental movements, and safe introduction of tackle, scrum and lineout.
Every coach is reviewed and assessed against criteria, and is given feedback on areas to consider for their next session.
Mark Greenlees, who is also the chairman of the mini rugby section said: “Like most of the group, I have learned a deeper understanding how to coach children.
“The content of this new course, also fits in well with the national adoption of new rules for under 7, and under 8 mini rugby players, and beyond. I will be strongly encouraging my fellow coaches to attend the next course!”
Matt Chambers is: “looking forward to putting into practice the 5C’s, and to watching the players develop and improve” while Neil Burfield is “excited about using more fun games and to improve each player’s physical literacy.”
Hadon Westerby, one of the coach educators leading the course, is also the youth development officer at Heathfield & Waldron rugby club.
“Every lead coach in the club is qualified. We put a lot of emphasis on upskilling and developing all of our coaches, and the club pays for our coaches to attend.
“Each coach might impact upon 20 or more players, and so they skills they are coaching, and how they are coaching their players is far reaching. We want every player, of all abilities and potential to enjoy their rugby.”
Anyone is welcome to come along to HWRFC and just give rugby a try.
Senior training has started, the junior sides will start later this month, and the mini section begins in September. More information can be found on the club website, or by emailing Hadon Westerby at firstname.lastname@example.org
