Lars Thorkildsen, an U16 player at Heathfield & Waldron Rugby Club, has been selected to play for the Norwegian national U18 rugby side in upcoming games against Sweden, Denmark and Latvia.
Lars flew out to Stavanger on the west coast of Norway last month to trial for the national rugby team, as well as compete in the Norwegian Rugby Sevens National Championship for local club Stavanger RFC on the Saturday.
The national trials, set up by English, Welsh and Spanish coaches from the Norwegian Rugby Federations, were a mixture of game play and various rugby exercises.
The National Sevens Championship was a game of two halves for Lars. In his first outing for his adopted club he was yellow-carded and sin-binned for a high tackle after just three minutes. However, he made up for this with his game play, scoring tries and conversions for the remainder of the tournament. Stavanger, with Lars in the team, won the event and were crowned Norwegian Rugby Sevens Junior Champions for 2013.
On the back of his performances, Lars has been selected to play international rugby for the U18 Norwegian national team in both 15-a-side and sevens rugby.
Following a training camp in Olso this August, he will play against Sweden in September, Sweden and Denmark in October and Latvia in November.
Lars, a loose forward, said: “It’s been an amazing experience so far, and I’m working hard to develop my game further so that I can contribute fully to the team.”
Hadon Westerby, the club’s rugby development officer, added: “Lars is a fantastic contributor to the club, both as a player and as a personality.
“This is a fantastic achievement for Lars, and we wish him all the very best in his preparations.”
Everyone is welcome to give rugby a try this season, play touch rugby, or attend the summer rugby camp and more information about the club can be found on the club website www.hwrfc.co.uk, by contacting Hadon Westerby on 07887 525 080 or emailing; email@example.com
