Hellingly Lions cycle speedway team retained the Rosebowl Trophy last Sunday at Southampton with a very narrow 1 point win in the last race of this 24 heats.

Hellingly who took on the hosts Southampton, Exeter and Swindon took the lead in heat 5 with a 6-4 from Jesse Moore and Martyn Hollebon and with Neil Hollebon winning heat 6 from the back recording a superb unbeaten 6 ride 24 point maximum.

Exeter beat Swindon in heat 7 and Southampton lost to Hellingly with the strong paring of F Moore and Hollebon.

At the interval stage Exeter lead the Lions by 2 points and Swindon just 1 point behind them.

After the break, with the track drying out and dusty, gating was very important which saw the Lions excel although Steve Archer clearly struggled on this fast big track although never giving up found points hard to come by.

Hellingly scored a superb 7-3 win over exeter in heat 23 leaving Swindon to beat Exeter by 2 points in the last race which they did which then saw the roaring Lions home by 1 very important point.

Final scores: Hellingly 64, Exeter 63, Southampton 56, Swindon 55.

This sunday the Lions are at home at the Lower Dicker circuit to Newport, 2pm start.
