After a lay-off of several years with a wrist injury, Bridgeview Judo Club’s Zac Beard has begun his long-awaited comeback in earnest. He competed in the Northern Home Counties Open Championships and soon dispelled any possible doubts he was not yet ready to fight at national level.

Weighing in right at the bottom of the under-90kg category, Beard looked to be in good shape and for a while appeared to be unstoppable.

He did get knocked out of the medal positions by a very strong counter-attack, but on the whole it was three questionable refereeing decisions that cost him on the day. He still finished in a creditable sixth place which is a very good start in his bid to gain access to the National Squad, and the Bridgeview coaching team are treating it as a good warm-up for the forthcoming Sussex Open.
