Lewes AC talents spread far and wide over the weekend

Athletics is more than just running and it was the turn of the walkers and jumpers to join the runners in getting some great results over the last weekend.

Achieving a tremendous first for the club was Olly Hopkins who, as the first junior club member to take up race walking, was selected to represent Sussex at the English Schools race walking championships.

Held at Boston in Lincolnshire he achieved a very credible fourth place in the under 15s championship event held over 3K. He finished in a personal best time of 18mins 57secs for the three kilometre race. Olly now is training for his first road walking event in October when he takes part in the Cambridge open series of race walks in Bexley in Kent.

Moving from walking to jumping there were five Lewes AC pole vaulters entered the Jim Day memorial Indoor vault competition at the Carshalton arena on Sunday. Again there was a bundle of excellent results with personal bests and club records spread around.

James Shackleton in the under 20 men age group cleared 4.32m for a new personal best and an indoor club record.

Livvy Connor in the under 17 women category cleared 3.62m for a new personal best and also a new indoor club record, this also equalled the Sussex County U17 record.

There were also personal bests and indoor club records for Millie Hemsley and Lucy Thompson. Millie set a new personal indoor best of 3.02m in the U17W age group. Lucy Thompson in the under 15 Girl category also set a new indoor personal best and indoor club record with a vault of 2.72m. Not to be left out Jack (Snapper) Harris in the under 15 boys group set a new indoor personal best with 2.92m

Also on the Sunday was the Hove Prom 10K where 14 Lewes AC runners took part in the very windy 10K held along the Brighton and Hove seafront. Despite the wind there were many seasonal and personal bests by the Lewes runners.

Lewes AC packed six runners in the first twenty finishers in the 230 runner race.

Leading the way in a time of 35mins 22secs was Lewis Sida in 3rd place overall and the first runner aged over 40.

Close behind in 6th place and second man over 40 was Andrew Masters in 36mins 07secs which was a seasons best for a 10K race. Next was Jonathon Burrell finishing in 12th in 37mins 28secs which also gave him second place in the men over 50 category. Making up the six top Lewes finishers were Robbie James in 14th in 37.45: Allan Jackson 17th in 38.01 and Lee Woodgate 18th in 38.09.

Lara Barazzuol again had a great run and celebrated breaking the 40min barrier by finishing in 33rd place in a time of 39mins 38secs which also gave Lara third place in the senior woman category. Other Lewes AC finishers were Ian Fines (36th in a PB time of 39.49): Helen Sida (61st 42.04 and a personal best); Megan Taylor (74th in a PB time of 43.16) Ian Hilder (96th 44.46): Karin Divall (101st 45.12 and 3rd woman over 50): Jeremy Wainwright (145th 49.19) and David Feintuck (195th 56.53)
