LEWES Golf Club’s scratch team progressed into the second round of the PAV i.t. Sussex County Matchplay Cup with a win at a wet and winder Willingdon on Saturday.
Lewes travelled to their near neighbours to play Round One of the SCGU PAV Trophy. The team of Lawrie Tremlett and Matt Hart, Ian Birch and AJ Boyse, Mark Hilton and Henry Hilton and Steve Verth and Jon Williams played foursomes in the morning and went into lunch 2-2 ready to start the afternoon of singles matches. The weather continued to deteriorate as the afternoon went on but the Lewes team rose to the challenge faced by the elements and their opposition to win 8½ points to 3½ points. On Sunday, the weather proved unpleasant again and the field playing in the PGA National ProAm delayed the start till late afternoon. The victor was Tom Hilton with a nett 72, and Andrew Fuller runner-up with nett 77. Tom will now go on to play with Lewes Professional Tony Hilton at Camberley Heath on the June 11. This week’s summer Eclectic was won by Tom Hilton with 29 points, beating John Abbott on 29 points also, while third was Paul Giles with 28 points. The Ladies competed for the Committee Cup on Wednesday and it was won by Lucia Simpson with 36 points with runner up Mandy Hilton scoring 32 points.
