Lewes Seniors’ impressive run in the Sussex County Golf Union’s Gilbert Print Plate ended in final frustration as they went down to defeat against the Dyke GC.
The final at Highwoods went down to the last few holes before Dyke gained a decisive advantage to run out winners by two and a half points to one and a half.
Skipper David Stenning later reflected on a long campaign which had seen his Lewes team come through four knock-out rounds, with wins over Cooden Beach, West Hove, Chartham Park and Nevill – before falling at the final hurdle. He said: “It was disappointing to lose in the final but when you consider that the competition started out with 35 clubs, it was quite an achievement to come as far as we did.”
Doug Burgess, Dick Turk, Tom Drysdale, Terry Ferber, Brian Mitchell and Roy Waghorne joined David in representing Lewes in the final.
No fewer than 64 members took part in the second round of the club’s Winter Eclectic. Geoff Bush took the honours with a 44-point return. Roger Lambert was a close second with 43 points and Paul Sandford was third with 42. Mike Pitt won the Midweek Stableford, with 39 points (Ian Thomas second, 38 and Dick Boland third, 37).
