As a postscript to last week’s report on the main event at the Ladies Spring Meeting at Lewes Golf Club, the day concluded with a remarkable 13-hole Greensomes competition in the afternoon.

Eventual winners Mandy Hilton and Katy Curtis set the short course contest on fire with a rare eagle two at the 345-yard second hole after Katy hit a fantastic drive for Mandy - who had already won the scratch event earlier in the day - to chip in from 130 yards.

Then, four holes later, Mandy went one better when she knocked in a hole-in-one at the par-three sixth.

Needless to say, Mandy and Katy went on to win comfortably with 32 points, four ahead of Ladies Captain Claudine Lower and Vice Captain Diana Higson, who finished runners-up on 28. Third were Tricia Wilcox and Maggie Neve with 26 points.

Mandy Hilton was back at the top of the leader board for the ladies’ next event, the Committee Cup. Her 35 points saw her just one clear of her four nearest rivals, of whom Mel Boyse was placed second and Jean Fears third on countback.

Lewes moved through to the next round of the Cyril Blake Cup, the Sussex County Golf Union’s inter-club knock-out competition for Seniors, with a convincing 3-1 victory over a strong West Hove side. Winning pairs were Nigel Howe and Tom Drysdale, Dick Turk and Trevor Goswell, and Dave Adams and Doug Burgess.

Their next opponents are Brighton and Hove in Round Two.

In club competitions over the Bank Holiday weekend, the May Medal went to Harry Oliver with a nett 64. Nigel Howe was second with nett 67, and Paul Thomsett edged into third place on countback with a nett 69.

Ellen Dunne took the Ladies May Medal with a nett 72.

Craig Brand’s 40-point return won the Summer Eclectic on countback, with Gabrielle (also 40) and Geoff Murray (39) taking the minor places.

Tim Lasham carded a nett 75 for the Midweek Medal.

In the third round of the Seniors’ Eclectic series, 34 points were sufficient to earn first prize for Peter W Jones ahead of Paul Harley on countback. Terry Stanley was a point behind in third place.

Assistant Professional Tom Richardson enjoyed success at the Sussex Colts Championship held at Mannings Heath. In a competition reduced by fog from 36 to just 27 holes, Tom shot two over par to take the prize for the lowest nett score on the day.

And congratulations to Mandy Quick, who has been selected to play for the Sussex Ladies Senior team to play Berkshire at Sandmartins Golf Club in Berkshire next week.
