A brand new basketball team has been formed in Lewes and is set to take on the best of Sussex later this year.

The Lewes Warriors has been set up by former Brighton Bears coach Rob Birchmore and will feature the cream of basketball talent in the Lewes area, as well as some experienced top players from around the planet.

The club is so new the players were due to take only their third ever training session together today (Friday).

They will take part in the next season of the Sussex Basketball League, which starts this October – and head coach and team founder Rob believes his side will go from strength to strength after a season of consolidation.

He said: “This will be the first time a men’s team out of Lewes has entered into the Sussex Basketball League.

“We will be playing out of Wave Leisure on Friday nights. We won’t win every game in our first season, but we will surprise many and in a season or two we will be going strong. I have recruited two top players form my old club, East Grinstead, and am close to securing a 6’7” Aussie.

“We also have a 6’4” American from Chicago and the rest are from Lewes or the close surrounding areas.”

The club is also investing in a junior team and Rob said: “The Juniors will be under the club banner as well. The two teams are growing nicely and the club is forming really well at this time. I do believe both teams have a strong future.

“After this first season the seniors could be close to leagues finals and the juniors will hold a strong position in the league once they come together.

“All players have lots of energy for this new adventure. The guys are really up for next season.”

The growing junior team is for boys and girls ages 10 to 18. The juniors are striving towards league play themselves but numbers are still low at present, said Rob.

“The Junior Warriors have already tasted league action against East Grinstead Junior Basketball Club. They played well and showed promise against a team of older players at a more established club.

“The senior Warriors are already booked into a summer tournament in Bexhill – Run and Gun, hosted by Bexhill Giants. This will be the team’s first action on court as Lewes Warriors.”

Seniors and juniors play out of Wave Leisure on Friday nights. Juniors train 6pm to 7.30pm and the Seniors follow at 7.30pm to 9pm.

The Lewes Warriors teams are looking for more players and local sponsorship to help them kickstart their first competitive season in Sussex Basketball. New players and potential sponsors are asked to contact the team’s coach on 07812 121 222 or find them on Facebook – or alternatively call the leisure centre for team times and details.
