Lewes Rugby Club have appointed a new coach, Mike Stubbs, and pre-season training for the men and Colts started this week.

From 14 July onwards this will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 pm at the club. Stubbs arrives from Scotland where he coached at Dundee Eagles and St Andrew’s University.

Before his Scottish experience, Mike had spent some time in Sussex coaching at Brighton College, Sussex Under 17s and the Harlequins School of Rugby.

Stubbs will also be playing for Lewes.

Having grown up in Ruthin in north Wales, Mike had previously featured for Sale Sharks A, North Wales and Pontypool before joining Worthing Raiders in 2011. But Mike’s most recent experience was at Dundee High Rugby playing in the Scottish Premiership, National League and the British and Irish Cup.

Stubbs has big ambitions for Lewes and wants to build on his predecessor’s work: “Key for us is to gain promotion for Lewes this season.

To do this we need to build up our strength by getting out two sides each week and continue to develop the strong link that Nigel Baker has already put in place with our local community, including players from Brighton University.”

Key for Mike will be to promote enjoyment in training and in the style of play.

“Play for the kid that fell in love with the game!” he says. Anybody who wants to try out or come back to rugby should come to the Stanley Turner Ground on Kingston Road in Lewes every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 pm.
