Lewes AC made a cracking start to the cross country season by winning the first East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League race held at Whitbread Hollow in Eastbourne.
With 15 runners to score for the team Lewes scored 603 points, just 13 points in front of Hailsham Harriers, who were the second team with 616 points. With nine teams competing in the league, Eastbourne Rovers came in third with 680 points and Hastings AC fourth with 834 points.
There were also some great individual performances in the various age-related categories as over the season of six races there are individual awards to be won as well as the team prize. In total, 29 Lewes runners competed in the race, with the two Bradford brothers leading the charge. David was first Lewes runner home in fourth, in a time of 29m 18s for the five-mile course, closely followed by Matt in ninth in a time of 30:36. Alan Velecky and John Lowden were virtually joined at the hip throughout, with Alan just two seconds ahead at the finish in a time of 31:28s to John’s 31:28. John, however, was the first over 50 in the whole race.
First Lewes woman was Sally Norris in 36:22 and 64th overall, and first in the senior women age category. Second Lewes woman was Carole Walters in 97th in 39.55, followed by Karin Dival in 99th in 40.09.
