Oliver Tuckley was the sole member of the Lewes Wanderers to compete in last Sunday’s Southern Counties Hardriders event.

This tough course is based around Bletchingley and features a mixture of scintillating descents interlaced with tough climbs along twisty country lanes. The technical nature of the course tests nerve, bike handling skills and stamina in equal measures, a ride not for the faint hearted.

A particular feature of this event was a full field of one hundred and twenty riders with thirty in reserve. The numbers were swelled by a fifty percent allocation to women entrants. The reason for such a wonderful participation was due to the fact that this race forms part of the twelve series events in the newly formed SEWTTS programme, a series promoted by National Time Champion Rebecca Slack, with the aim to encourage greater participation in Time Trialling for women of all abilities, from the novice rider up to the elite performer.

Oliver, due to the technical nature of the course, elected to ride the course on his road bike as opposed to the slightly more “twitchy” time trial version, and posted a respectable time of 1:07:26. The overall winner was the talented Steve Kane of Brighton Excelsior in a time of 50:35.
