The only goal of the game saw Hailsham Men’s 1s triumph against Lewes 3s at the Southdown Club on Saturday.
Hoping to repeat their 6-1 victory against Lewes 3s earlier in the season, Hailsham soon found themselves up against a team ready for a fight, and despite some good chances for Lloyd Williams and Alex Smith, the first half ended 0-0.
The second half saw the game played at the same frantic pace, with neither side able to gain the upper hand. Finally, after a run up the left-hand side of the pitch, Sam Rham’s pinpoint pass into the Lewes D was slammed into the back of the Lewes goal by skipper Lee Humber.
Lewes responded by throwing everything into the attack, yet keeper Matt Abson-Bennett played another faultless game, making several crucial saves to keep Hailsham ahead despite the team at one stage being down to nine players due to yellow cards.
The result sees the teams swap places in division, with both teams equals on points and Hailsham ahead on goal difference.
Hailsham now set their sights on next week’s game against St Francis 1s who are just one point above them in the league.
