Sussex sailor Oli Greber is about to embark on the biggest week of his sailing career to date when he jets off to Limassol, Cyprus tomorrow (Friday, July 12).

The Sussex Downs College student is set to represent RYA Volvo Team GBR at the pinnacle event of the Youth sailing calendar, the 2013 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships.

The event, which takes place between July 13-20, is the 43rd edition of the championship. It is seen by many as the ‘Youth Olympics’ for sailing and has over the years identified talented sailors such as multiple Olympic gold medallists Ben Ainslie, Sarah Ayton and Iain Percy.

Greber, 17, from Pevensey Bay Sailing Club, who clinched a silver medal at the SL16 class World Championships in France last Friday (July 5), will be amongst the 12-strong RYA Volvo Team GBR squad looking to make their mark at the annual regatta in Limmassol, Cyprus when racing gets underway on Monday.

“It feels amazing to be selected for RYA Volvo Team GBR after all the hard work we’ve done over the winter,” said Greber, who lives in Eastbourne.

“It’s a privilege to be selected as many great athletes and Olympians have competed in this event in the past.

“It will be a huge honour to represent Great Britain at the ISAF Youth Worlds as it is the pinnacle of youth sailing and a lot of very successful sailors have competed for GBR at the this regatta. It will be an exciting and very competitive event as only the best from each country get selected; this will provide a huge challenge which we will thrive on.”

The Sussex Downs College student earned selection for the multihull catamaran SL16 berth in Cyprus after winning the RYA Youth National Championship title at Largs, Scotland in April with his sailing partner James Henson from Spetisbury, Dorset.

“Selections were tough but we had a lot of confidence going into the event as we had won the Datchet cat open and practice regatta at our recent training camp,” added Greber.

Duncan Truswell, RYA Youth Racing Manager, explained: “The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most significant events on the Youth Sailing calendar. It is a different event as there are 61 nations, which is more than most other events, but the most unique part is that you have only got one representative per nation in each class – just like at the Olympic Games.

“Hence all our sailors – irrespective of class – are all part of the same RYA Volvo Team GBR, which gives it a different feel and makes it extra special.”

There will be 12 races each for the eight classes competing in Cyprus with the medals due to be decided in the final race on Friday, July 19. All the British sailors are aged between 15 and 18.

Once again, RYA Volvo Team GBR are supported by Volvo Car UK and Henri Lloyd, who are the official kit supplier for the GBR team.
