Forty-two men competed for the Southon Salver, and most of them scored well, but the winner, again, was Nigel Roddis, whose many friends and admirers will be pleased to see his handicap being steadily whittled down.
Nigel won on countback from Phillip Mumford and Dennis Tyson: all three had 40 points.
The weather on Thursday May 8th was dreadful for the ladies (as it so often is, poor dears).
Two hardy souls went out and played eighteen holes while the rest stayed in the warm, drinking coffee and congratulating themselves.
It was if anything worse on Saturday for the thirty-six holes Hamilton Russell Mixed Foursomes: steady rain and a howling gale was a miserable context for Piltdown’s premier mixed event.
Congratulations therefore to Grant Horscroft and Alison Newnham for a resolute 61 points – popular winners as they are two of the best players and nicest people in the club – and sympathy to the rest. Chris Manwaring and Catherine Scrivens scored 59 for second place, on countback from Ken Bulteel and Isabelle Marsh.
