The fourth fixture in the East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League took place at the challenging two-lap course in Wadhurst and saw Heathfield Road Runners secure their best result of the season so far.
The club, who join forces together with Uckfield Runners in the league, finished in second place behind Hailsham Harriers, but importantly took a significant step to come in front of the Lewes AC team.
In spite of the continued wet weather, which saw the previous league event at Pett cancelled, the course at Snape Wood was in good condition and benefitted from being on a steep slope, not to mention adding to the challenge of the event.
Heathfield’s juniors kicked off in great style – Alex Bailey coming in second place in the 800m with brother Jack Bailey in eighth place in the 1600m race.
A big run from several Heathfield runners saw two top 10 places - James Cox (34.35; 5th) and Ian Bromley (34.58; 9th). Sarah Roff, who has recently been selected to run cross country at county level, was the first lady to come across the finish line, delivering a fantastic 35.41, 11th.
Other performances from Heathfield Road Runners included Cedric Clemerson (38.08; 25th), Rowan Baker (40.16; 33rd), Andrew Titmus (41.23; 38th), Will Blanford (41.34; 39th), Paul Bailey (42.17; 49th), Andrew Saunders (44.12; 62nd) and Sharon Saunders (48.48; 87th).
The next and final league fixture is at Blackstock Farm, Hellingly, on Sunday 23rd February. This is a new course for the league this year and will culminate with the season awards presentation.
