Newhaven’s Darren Terry has to be favourite for this year’s Banger League title at Arlington, after another solid performance in round seven of the bangers South Coast Hydraulics championship.

Thirty cars were out on track for the first race including two female drivers, which added a completely different dynamic to the evening.

Generally a male domain, unlike other sports, banger racing is open to both sexes.

This was the first time this season that any females had considered mixing it with the lads. Becky Hunn, a former 1300cc stock car driver, and Jenny Garrett, a motorsport instructor, thundered into the challenges as much as their male counterparts.

Already holding a good lead at the top of the table, Terry was desperate to edge a little nearer to success, but did so with a degree of professionalism. In a hectic climax to the first race, he crossed in a solid third place. He went one better in the second race with a very assured second position. With the usual double points at stake in the final, Terry did his title chances no harm at all coming home third.

Second in the table before the meeting, title holder Rob Haines suffered mechanical problems all evening in his Riggs Plant-sponsored Honda. So much so that he didn’t finish a race all night, which has surely dented his chances of retaining his crown.

After these results, Terry, on 138 points, has increased his lead to 32 points ahead of Haines who just about hangs on to second in the table. A late charge from ex-Dreamer team member Mark Pope could still threaten Haines’ position.

Winning a heat and being second in the final elevated Pope up to third place, while Rob Barnes, close behind in fourth, will still have designs on second spot also.

With only three rounds to go, Terry’s looks to have an unassailable lead but in racing literally anything can happen.
