On the occasion of the 83rd annual dinner of the Sussex Society of Rugby Union Football Referees, local Uckfield Rugby Club director and life member Alan J Sallows was presented with the J V Pollard Award – a cut glass brandy goblet suitably etched – for services rendered to The Society over a period of some 40 years as treasurer, referee, chairman, coach and observer.

In a brief thank you address to the company of some 100 guests at the Chatsworth Hotel in Worthing, which included Harry Leach President SSRFUR and Dewi Vaughan President SCRU, Alan highlighted the urgent need to recruit more younger referees, especially since the recent successful hosting of the World Cup will create a legacy of more younger individuals – girls and boys – taking up the sport of Rugby Union.
