The Uckfield Rugby Club U11s have had a very successful first tour away at Farnham. The team travelled together by Coach to Farnham RFC where they were greeted by the hosts who were fantastic throughout.
On arrival it was clear Farnham had great facilities with a brand new club house and excellent looking pitches.
Next stop was the hotel where everyone settled down before regrouping for the team dinner. This was followed by one of the highlights of the tour – the presentation of the tour shirts. Each boy was called in turn and presented with their first tour shirt complete with names and positional numbers.
A hearty breakfast the following morning was followed by a short coach ride to Farnham where the boys were shown to their dressing room – another first for many of the lads! It was then time for the coaches pep talk to inspire the rather tired bunch of lads into playing an enthusiastic game of rugby against some tough opposition - Guilfordians and Farnham A. They were also informed that conversions would be taken – yet another first for the lads.
The Uckfield lads were first on against Guilfordians and it was a tight affair. Uckfield’s scrum had the upper hand and the backs were on their game straight away with some good passing moves despite the blustery wind. A lot of time was spent in the opponents half but they couldn’t find a way through some stubborn defence. The second half started the same way with both sides evenly matched. With a minute to go Uckfield were awarded another scrum and once again pushed the opponents back but this time Harvey Pr decided to pick up and go. This took Guilford by surprise and despite some last ditch tackling they could not stop Harvey scoring the try. Harry’s first conversion attempt went straight through the middle of the posts and we went on to win 7-0. Some great rugby was played by both sides in an excellent spirit.
After a short break and the boys regrouping in the changing room they were back out to play the Hosts - Farnham A. This again was a close fought affair but Uckfield’s forwards were winning the day in the scrums, mauls and line outs. The wind was making things difficult but the backs were also making some excellent tackles and doing some fluent passing moves despite the conditions.
Uckfield took an early lead with a bulldozing run by Harvey Pr, ably assisted by his teammates in getting across the try line. Harry’s conversion again was sweetly struck through the middle of the posts to give Uckfield a 7-0 lead. This spurred the boys on and some impressive attacking play took the ball out wide to Ted who went in to score the try. Harry made it 3 out of 3 and Uckfield finished the half 14-0 up. The second half was attritional with both sides playing some good rugby. The defending was fantastic all round with some crunching tackles going in. Farnham broke Uckfield’s try line with the last play of the game and kicked the conversion so the game finished 14-7 to Uckfield. Farnham were very gracious in defeat and complimented the coaches on some fantastic rugby played by the Uckfield U11s.
The boys came off battered and bruised after that game but were delighted to come away undefeated on their first tour. After some more food it was then back on the coach for the trip back, parting as firm friends with Farnham.
