Fans of Uckfield rugby were denied the chance to travel to Hempstead Fields on Saturday to watch the club’s newly-promoted 3rd XV go through the formalities of playing before lifting the Sussex 3 title that was theirs in all but name when opponents Rye 2nd XV cancelled just earlier today (Thursday).
Ironically, the only way Uckfield could not have been crowned champions if they themselves had called off the game. But as it is the visitors who have pulled the plug, Uckfield’s Thirds are now confirmed winners of the league.
Although fans will not be able to make the most of the forcast good weather this weekend, there is still plenty for the club to celebrate, as a magnificent treble of league successes has been achieved by the first three men’s XVs – in Sussex 1, Sussex 2 and 3 respectively. All three teams won their leagues at a canter.
On Saturday, Uckfield 3rd XV put in a superb performance to beat one of their friendliest and closest rivals, Newick, 88-3 on a sunny day at Hempstead Fields.
Adrian Evans came on for the injured skipper Robbie Cannon and, at 64, must surely be the oldest prop to be promoted in League Sussex rugby.
