Uckfield’s Junior Squash team played its third but first away fixture on Saturday 6 December against Lewes 3 at the Southdown Club.

Against a long-established club with great strength in depth, this was always going to be a tough match!

Making her team debut at number three was Natalie Killian who had only just recovered in time from a shoulder injury. This was a tremendously close match with Natalie losing the first game but winning the next two. With the fourth going to her opponent, the fifth game was won by the Lewes player but it was a terrific performance by Natalie who showed signs that she can fulfil her potential.

At number two, Alexander Darlington got off to a nervous start but could easily have won either of the first two games. Instead he found himself 2-0 down but showed great determination to fight back to 2-1. The fourth game was an epic and he was so close to taking the match to a fifth but just lost it 15-13! He was unlucky to have been drawn against such a strong opponent, who according to the noticeboard was the Lewes club’s current under 13 champion!

With the match already lost, brother Oliver Darlington looked very determined at number one and was much too strong for his opponent, driving her back with deep shots to the back of court to earn an excellent 3-0 victory!

So a defeat 2-1 but the youngsters all gained valuable experience and improved their games.

With one game left before Christmas, all the squad have now played at least one match and the team sit in a mid-table position, hoping to improve as the season progresses.
