Hockey: Hailsham are made to pay for second half yellow cards away at South Saxons
Hailsham Men’s 1st XI travelled to Horntye in Hastings, where they suffered a 7-1 defeat to South Saxons 1st XI.
Leading at half time through a Tristan Pengilly goal, at one stage the team were down to seven men in the second half thanks to a flurry of yellow cards from the umpires.
Stand-in goalkeeper Alan Brundle and the defence were hard-pressed to keep the South Saxons’ overwhelming attack at bay but managed to keep the home team’s score in single figures, with Brundle’s save of a South Saxons penalty stroke lifting the team spirits.
The result leaves the team third from bottom in the table.
In Sussex Open Men’s Div 4, Hailsham’s 2nd XI beat Worthing’s 5th XI 14-0 at Hailsham Community College.
Ian Johnson opening the scoring inside the first five minutes, converting a cross into the Worthing penalty area supplied by Adam Robinson.
In what became a very one-sided game after half-time, the home team went on to score another 13 goals without conceding any.
Scorers: Ian Johnson 4; Richard Whitling 3; Sam Rham 3; Taf Mpandawana 2; Chris Hendley 1; Adam Robinson 1.
Hailsham Ladies’ 1st XI’s game with Chichester Priory Park 1st XI in Sussex Ladies Division 1 was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
Hailsham Ladies 2nd XI travelled to Middleton and Bognor for their Sussex Ladies Division 3 game, where they won 3-2.
The visitors struggled to find the match-winning form that they have displayed in recent weeks and found themselves on the defence for most of the first 35 minutes, with Bognor scoring the only goal of the half.
Hailsham started the second half more up-tempo but still not playing the smooth hockey of recent weeks, and consequently it was Bognor that got the next goal. With 10 minutes to go Hailsham finally switched on and, after relentless pressure, Bognor conceded a short corner that was converted into a goal by Amy Green.
Five minutes later Green scored again in open play to level the score.
With just 20 seconds left on the clock Susie Smith buried the ball in the back of the Bognor net to secure all 3 points for Hailsham.
This week’s game may not have been pretty, but the result keeps the Hailsham team in contention for promotion.
With the previous week’s Sussex Development League East Division game having being rained off with a flooded pitch, Hailsham Millers managed to play this week, against Southwick Juniors, despite the potential of a frozen pitch which defrosted just in time.
The Millers as always played a flowing game of hockey and despite going 1-0 down after 15 minutes, they were not fazed and the reward for their persistence eventually came with two goals for Will Kirkham and 1 for Max Wootten that gave the Millers an unassailable 3-1 win and back-to-back victories.
