Supporting Sussex players from afar
LAST week was the UK Open – the FA Cup of Darts, as they now label it. I was pretty dejected at not qualifying for the tournament, but I lost to better players, and can't argue with that... can I not draw top seeds next year please?
As I wasn't in the competition, I didn't travel to Bolton, but watched from my armchair. My two travelling companions – Adrian Gray, and Tony Ayres were both in action though, so I supported from afar.
First up was Adrian, against former World Championship Runner-up, Kirk Shepherd. It was a good match, but unfortunately, Adi missed crucial doubles in one leg, and with Shepherd closing out the match with a 10-darter, was out of the competition.
Tony, however, had other ideas. A couple of good early round matches set him up against Mark Walsh, the number one seed. Despite going 5-0 down, Tony (left, on stage the the UK Open) came back to win. He went on to beat Alan Tabern and James Wade before losing out to Gary Anderson in the semis.
Highlight of his week was checking out 152 against Wade with him sat on 40, thus making the match 8-8, and then closing out his win with a 13-darter.
When he rang me for a lift this coming weekend, I assumed he was taking us by private jet...looks like I'm driving again!
My own darts hadn't been so good of late, but this week they have gone well.
A good win on Tuesday in the Harvey league, but alas, our team lost to the May Garland. Then it was on to the Superleague on Wednesday, with our Hollington Oak side at home to the Red Oaks from Brighton.
I played OK, and won my match 3-0. The team went on to win 7-2, so a good team result at last.
This weekend we are back on the PDC Tour, starting in Barnsley. We drive up Friday night, then after the competition it is out into the town to find a bar to watch England v USA in the World Cup, that coupled with the fact that it is my birthday as well should mean we have a good night.
Come on England... Oh, and come on Relfy – I need a good run in the competitions this weekend.
