Pevensey Junior Cricket Club are celebrating winning the Sports Achievement award at the SPARK Awards 2014, which were held at the De La Warr Pavillion in Bexhill .
The event was staged for the third year by SPARK – a network for young people’s organisations in East Sussex – with around 400 guests in attendance - and celebrates the dedication of voluntary and community groups supporting children and young people in East Sussex and the talent and commitment of the young people themselves.
The club were recognised for their work developing a thriving junior section with an inclusive ethos, bringing together young people from Eastbourne and the surrounding villages to participate and learn the game.
Labour Parliamentary candidate Jake Lambert attended the evening and is a club member. He said, “This award is fantastic recognition for the young people and coaches involved at Pevensey.
“Pevensey is a real community club, providing opportunities for young people to participate and enjoy the game, as well as offering young coaches from our vibrant University of Brighton campus in Eastbourne experience in the local community.
“This success is testament to the positivity of the volunteer coaches and parents who make Pevensey such a welcoming place to play cricket.”
Nominations for the awards came from a range of SPARK members from youth clubs to counselling and support services, including those for people with disabilities and complex needs.
Many SPARK members are small, grass-roots organisations run by volunteers in their spare time which make a real difference to their communities, but whose work often goes unrecognised.
With a long history dating back to 1887, the new generation at Pevensey Cricket Club are ensuring that the close of play is still a long way off!
The club will hope to keep giving young players and coaches the chance to excel.
