Rooks Supporters Trust will "continue to be critical friend" of club

The Rooks Supporters Trust said it welcomed the transition of Lewes FC in becoming a community-owned club – but insisted it would "continue in its role as a critical friend" while the new owners take the club forward.

The fledgling Lewes Community Football Club has a declared aim of passing ownership to the fans on the terraces, with a one-member, one-share, one vote system in operation within 18 months.

Says a Trust spokesman: "The new organisation has been set up very much along the lines of the Trust itself. We're broadly very happy with what has happened, and we have a good relationship with the new people at the top.

"Some people have questioned whether the Trust is still needed. If things go according to plan, the day may indeed come when all the Trust's objectives have been met by the new community benefit society.

"In the meantime, however, we feel that our close continuing relationship with our parent organisation, Supporters Direct, together with the constant input of our members, will ensure that we are in a position to argue for the very best outcome for the fans.

"In short, now that the club has a board which prioritises involving the community in the future of Lewes FC, the Supporters Trust has become more important than ever before."

The Trust has outlined a number of priorities for the months ahead:

• The club should publish a financial overview at the start of each season, with the budget allocations to each area of activity clearly laid out.

• Supporters need a full explanation of responsibilities on the new executive, so that they eventually know who they are voting for and which areas they cover.

• There should be regular elections to the board, with 50 per cent of places elected annually.

• The club needs to involve a broad sweep of local groups and individuals with valuable experience to contribute – including non-football trusts, fan organisations, local community representatives, charities, voluntary bodies and the local authority, Lewes District Council.
