Rooks still waiting on the taxman

LEWES FC are still waiting to see if their offer to the taxman will be accepted.

The club owe a substantial amount to HM Revenue & Customs and have put forward a proposal to pay off the debt in instalments.

With the cloud of administration still weighing heavily above them, all the Rooks board can now do is cross its fingers and hope the deal is accepted.

Managing director Martin Elliott held a meeting on the club's finances on Wednesday and manager Steve Ibbitson, who attended the first part before taking the first training session of the pre-season, confirmed they were still waiting for the Inland Revenue's reply.

He said: "We talked about the major financial issues of the club and that we are still waiting for a response from the Inland Revenue."

On the field Ibbitson is in positive mood after a highly successful first training session.

"Training went very well last night.

"We had about 26 there so it was a good turnout.

"A few of the players we are hoping to talk to weren't there but we knew they couldn't make it and we had one or two who we didn't know come along and a couple who weren't up to it. Some we will be having another look at over the next couple of weeks as we try to finalise the squad."

One player who impressed is 15-goal Worthing midfielder Scott Kirkwood, and Ibbitson is keen to add his name to his squad along with several players from last season's team.

He said, "We expect Scott to sign, he was at training along with some other very good players we were impressed with.

"The fact is he is very keen to sign but the game being as it is you are never sure until they put their name on the form.

"Danny Cullip is on contract so he's with us next year.

"I haven't signed anybody else on yet but I'm hopeful Rikki Banks, Chris Breach, Anthony Barness and Joe Keehan will stay with us.

"We will look to supplement those five players with ten or so experienced players who can make up the squad with our good young players from last year."

One player unlikely to be turning out for Lewes this season however is Luke Rooney, as the 18-year-old on loan from Gillingham last year has been given a full time contract by his club.
