Vacher 'ecstatic' to finally land overseas star

UCKFIELD captain Chris Vacher says the team are 'ecstatic' to finally see their overseas player in action after protracted visa problems were resolved.

Australian right-hander Dan Gleeson made his long awaited debut last Saturday, scoring 28 runs in the six-wicket defeat of Crawley despite only flying in the following morning.

Vacher is backing the 22-year-old from Sydney, who can also bowl off spin, to help transform Uckfield's disappointing start to the season which has seen them net just one win in five Division Three East matches.

He said: "He flew in on Friday morning after getting his visa at long last and we managed to get him out on the wickets last Saturday, even though he was a bit jet lagged.

"He has played Grade A cricket and he's been brought over here to bat and coach primarily. We are ecstatic really, he's a lovely fella and we need that boost, that lift to help us compete at this level.

"We have a young side so bringing somebody over who has played at that level can bring good experience and also a fresh approach to the game."

Gleeson has enjoyed a busy first week in England, travelling around to local schools to give one-hour coaching sessions, and he will be coaching all the Uckfield teams from the under-tens up to the first team.

Uckfield first team have suffered with injuries and players at university, but Vacher has been encouraged by some impressive batting displays which have seen his side reach over 200 runs in their last four games.

Vacher's team have also drawn Premier League Eastbourne in the league Twenty/20 competition, and the skipper says they are looking forward to the daunting trip to The Saffrons on June 21.
