Sussex jockey Ryan wins Classic double

Sussex jockey Ryan Moore achived his Classic dream two times over this weekend by adding Derby success on Workforce to his Oaks triumph on Snow Fairy yesterday.

As our horse racing correspondent Jason Hall this week wrote in the Sussex Express: "With 16 Group one race victories behind him and two jockeys championships already in the bag, Moore does not have to prove to anyone his quality in the saddle and his place as one of the world's leading exponents of his art.

"(But) a Classic victory has evaded him to date and that is what the racing world and the general public will next be looking for him to achieve and that the historians will require if he is ultimately to be remembered as a great jockey of his time."

And Moore has surely assured himself a place in the racing hall of fame with a stunning triumph in the race that is widely viewed as the Blue Riband event of flat racing.

Workforce broke the Epsom track record with a blistering turn of foot as he won the 231st running of the Derby by seven lengths at Epsom.

It was the fifth victory in the race for Newmarket trainer Sir Michael Stoute as Workforce finished ahead of 100-1 shot At First Sight with Frankie Dettori third on 9-2 chance Rewilding.

Champion jockey Moore told BBC Sport after his memorable win: "We had a really clean run. He quickened up really well and he kept extending. He's a really good horse and I'm delighted.

"He was awesome. He travelled beautifully. It's a very special day. I was delighted to win the Oaks but this is the most important race for me."

Trrainer Sir Michael added: "Ryan has a great temperament.

"After a poor ride in the St Leger for me with the favourite (Conduit two years ago) I wanted him to get a monkey off his back. He has done that today."
