Ton-up Lewes are league champions
LEWES overwhelmed Crawley in their final league match of the season. They have won the league scoring more than a hundred goals in the process.
The early exchanges looked as though both sides had enjoyed their Easter breaks rather too much and, with the warm weather, there was plenty of misplaced passes.
Lewes had the majority of possession but failed to capitalise on early opportunities. With 20 minutes gone and the match goalless, Lewes finally broke the deadlock from close range through skipper Rory Jervis.
Within five minutes their hundredth league goal arrived and it was apt that Jervis should score it. Just on half time Jervis scored his hat-trick and Lewes were coasting.
Early in the second half Lewes found themselves down to 10 men, during which time Crawley took advantage to get a goal back and then, despite Lewes being back up to 11 players, Crawley grabbed a second.
This stung Lewes into action and Daffyd Charles scored from a penalty corner and then from open play, with Will Champness also scoring after his shot was deflected in, also from a penalty corner.
With 10 minutes left Lewes scored their final goal after good approach play left Steve Newton with a simple tap-in.
Crawley scored the final goal from a penalty stroke in the closing stages.
Lewes will enjoy the summer break before preparing for life in South Premier Division Two.
