Artwork celebrates trans experience in Brighton

Trans Pride 2016 is set to transform The Marlborough in Brighton into a hub of creative collaboration.

Spokeswoman Nina Sarfas said: “A new installation is being constructed at The Marlborough to celebrate Trans Pride. Nothing About Us, Without Us is an immersive piece of mixed media, utilising sound bites and visual elements to inform visitors about trans experience, which can be enhanced by using headsets from our venue.

“The Marlborough will also be hosting Trans Pride Art Night on Thursday, July 21, a showcase of micro-commissions, supported by Arts Council England, promoting the trans community’s wealth of creative talent. Featuring cabaret pieces examining the socio-politics of transitioning (Elijah W Harris) and the seminal trans Coronation Street character of Hayley Cropper (Kate O’Donnell) in our theatre. Finally, we present an interactive game experience Interchangeable Bodies that encourages us to examine and illuminate gender, trans experience and normativity through play.”

Nothing About Us, Without Us is being created by artists Yishay Garbasz and Annie Goh.

Nina said: “Even within LGTBQI communities, trans-voices are on the periphery, particularly trans-women of colour. Interviews conducted by Yishay Garbasz, especially for this project, form a collage that pours out into the public space. This work attempts to give space to the individual stories told, to let go of control and give agency to voice and expression of those speaking.”

The collage will play from speakers outside the Marlborough pub, Brighton every day from 12pm-4pm. The event runs from Monday July 11-August 12.
