Months of rehearsals, multiple cups of tea and numerous packets of fig rolls couldn’t have prepared the Maestro Academy Players for the excited reception they received at their ‘Big Band Concert Evening’ at Newhaven Fort.
Paul Boswell, the groups’ leader, had been growing in stress and glee as the weeks drew ever closer to the performance, his eyes lighting up as the thought of sounding like ‘a real London band’ became a reachable conquest.
As the first few bars of ‘The Strictly Come Dancing’ theme tune sounded out, the audience lifted their anticipated heads in recognition and it became clear the evening was going to be a triumph.
The dance floor remained full throughout the Waltzes, the Jitterbugs and the Cha cha chas with many demanding more at the end of the set.
The band only had time for a quick drink and then they were back to work playing everything from Glenn Miller to Count Basie.
As the final notes from ‘Theme from New York, New York’ blared out the evening drew to a close and the promise of more gigs resonated on everyone’s lips.
