Artwave is back!

Artwave Festival
Artwave Festival

From this weekend, August 24 to September 8, the district’s visual arts festival Artwave is here to inspire and entertain.

Now is the time to start planning your visit and making the most of the two weeks of creativity on show. Alongside many open studios and galleries, the homes of artists and makers are opening to reveal their latest work beautifully displayed in stunning surroundings.

The first Saturday of the festival, August 24, Lewes Arts Fair debuts at Lewes Town Hall, promising quality art work and a great place to start your exploration of Artwave and the Lewes District. Visit www.lewesarts.co.uk.

The fair will also include live action painting by internationally renowned artist and illustrator Pete Fowler, a performance of The Cabinet of Charms by Helen Hockin and narrative magic from Jon Armstrong.

New to Artwave this year is the Lewes photographer Carlotta Luke, who will showcase her latest project, Phoenix Project, in a photographic trail of Lewes Town Centre. Her project has documented the artistic community based in the Phoenix Industrial Estate. The trail will conclude in an exhibition at Lewes Tourist Information Centre (TIC), 187 High Street. Visit www.phoenixproject.org.uk.

Featured artist at Newhaven Fort this year, Rachel Cohen, presents her installation that responds to the Fort’s setting, architecture and collections. A fleet of 100 small ceramic boats create a poetic dialogue with the stories told at this historic site. Visitors will be given 50 per cent discount to the Fort with an Artwave brochure. Log on to www.rachelcohen.co.uk.

You can hear about Carlotta and Rachel’s project on August 31 at Lewes TIC, at an artist’s talk and walk, which will lead people down to the Phoenix Festival at Zu Studios. The Talk and Walk event is free but booking is recommended. Please call 01273 483348 to reserve your space.

Councillor Rob Blackman said: “It’s great that in these straightened times we can continue to support and invest in Artwave.

“This promises to be the best Artwave ever so do go along and see what’s on offer.”
