Carrying the torch for the short story

THE Small Wonder short story festival will take place at Charleston, Firle, from September 27 to 30.

In this London Olympics year, Small Wonder carries the torch for the short story - neither the sprint of the haiku nor the marathon of the novel, but the premier 800 metres of literature.

Champion writers from all over the world will flock to the site, where the stadium is a traditional barn and Arabian tent, and the podium a lectern.

On your marks for Kevin Barry, Jonathan Coe, Susannah Clapp, Margaret Drabble, Will Gompertz, Jackie Kay, A.L. Kennedy, Sarah Hall, Joseph O’Connor, Ross Raisin, Michele Roberts, Elif Ahafek, Ben Watt - and others.

Worldwide participants will include Roshi Fernando (Sri Lanka), Elif Shafek (Turkey) and Fang Fang (China) and there will be family fun too.
