AN act of brutal ugliness is transformed into an object of exceptional grace and beauty by artist Steve Yeates.

He collected shattered glass from a vandalised bus shelter, mixed it with resin and created ‘Emma’, a 65cm tall figure of a young woman in a long flowing dress.

The positively luminous sculpture can be seen alongside equally powerful images by artist Mandeep Birdy at the Lansdown Gallery, Lewes.

Called ‘Figure in Form and Light’, the show is proving an exciting and thought-provoking collaboration between the two Brighton artists.

Mandeep’s recent work includes paintings inspired by the ancient iconic sculptures of Northern India, combining both serenity and strength. Her creations are often in mixed media, rich in texture and depth.

Steve takes recycling in exciting new directions. His critically-acclaimed papier mache and mixed media figures incorporate playing cards, music scores and even Ordnance Survey maps.

‘Figure in Form and Light’ is at the Lansdown Place venue (10am-5pm) until tomorrow (Saturday) when both artists will be available to discuss their work from 1-3pm.
