23-year-old Dan Owen completes a successful debut headline tour with a date at The Hope & Ruin in Brighton on December 1.

“It has been a big year for me,” says Dan who started gigging when he was 13 years old, playing guitar for his singer sister.

“She was doing mainly K T Tunstall songs and some old Etta James songs. We just did open mics and stuff. I started singing when I was 16 and then I started gigging when I was 17. I have been doing 150 gigs a year ever since.

“When I was starting off, I did a lot of blues covers, and my music is influenced by the blues, but it is not really blues. It is singer-songwriter sort of stuff. It’s hard to describe exactly what it is, but all my songs are my own now except for the odd cover.

“We have got an EP which we have put out, me, my manager and the label. It is called Bad For Me which is one of the tracks. It is my first proper release. We had a single out a couple of months ago and have now followed up with the EP, and it has done really well. It got to number 12 in the UK singer-songwriters charts. It just happened. We didn’t massively push it apart from a couple of Facebook posts. It has been good.”

And it all puts even further in the past an accident which damaged his eyesight.

“I was training to be a carpenter. I wanted to make guitars eventually, and when I was at college, I had an accident in the workshop with a piece of wood coming out of a machine and hitting me in the face. It means I can’t see properly anymore. I couldn’t do the fine work (as a carpenter) any more. I have got permanent constant double vision, and I can’t see 3D any more. But you just learn to live with it. It was six years ago now…”
