Uckfield Festival: Red Priest, St Margaret’s Church, Buxted, Thursday, July 17

Uckfield Music Club’s 70th Anniversary Concert, in association with the Uckfield Festival, presented Red Priest, the dazzling baroque foursome of Piers Adams (recorder), Julia Bishop (violin), Angela East, (cello) and David Wright (harpsichord).

They played their new programme ‘Handel in the Wind’, which included Vivaldi, JS Bach and CPE Bach at St Margaret’s Church in Buxted Park.

The Uckfield Music Club was launched in 1944 and since then it has presented an annual season of chamber music concerts.

In 2005 a change was made from a winter to a summer season and at the same time the concert venue was moved from Uckfield to St Margaret’s Church. The church has an excellent acoustic and a beautiful setting. This, coupled with the quality of the music presented, has proved to be popular with a growing audience.

Red Priest is the only early music group in the world to have been compared in the press to the Rolling Stones, Jackson Pollock, the Marx Brothers, Spike Jones and the Cirque du Soleil.

This extraordinary acoustic foursome has been described by music critics as “visionary and heretical” with a “red-hot wicked sense of humour” and a “break-all-rules, rock-chamber concert approach to early music”.
