A new play called The Widow, directed by Patric Kearns of Talking Scarlet Productions, is set to open at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne, on July 22.
Written by Merlin Ward, The Widow is a haunting love story with a beautiful heroine, a twisted antagonist, an ancient scandal and a long-dead victim still haunting the halls of a stately home. It is a ghostly tale of thwarted ambition, unswerving maternal love, and a doomed romance that warms the heart.
At the age of 13, Merlin Ward attended a remote school at the suggestion of a child psychologist as a way to cure his speech inhibiting stutter. One night, Merlin woke and made his way down the staircase to the bathroom. As he reached a half landing, a boy approached him, coming within touching distance. Merlin thought he was a friend from the dormitory two flights up and he said hello. There was no response.
A few days later, the local river flooded and took the life of two boys attending the school. Decades later, Merlin is convinced that he met and spoke to the ghost of a pupil.
Performances take place from July 22 to 26, at 7.45pm. Matinees at 2.30pm on July 23 and July 26. Visit www.eastbournetheatres.co.uk.
