Bring your dancing shoes and expect to lose your voice if you choose to go and see fun and high energy musical Thriller Live now showing at Theatre Royal Brighton.
The Michael Jackson tribute musical directed by Gary Lloyd takes the audience on a journey from the King of Pop’s first venture into the charts with Jackson Five to his most celebrated works Billie Jean, Bad and of course Thriller.
Right from the beginning the audience is encouraged to get up and sing, dance and clap to the songs. I was singing so much, I had lost my voice by the end of the evening.
This is unlike any other pop/rock band style musical. In Mamma Mia and We Will Rock You there is an original storyline with no mention of Queen or Abba or their careers.
But Thriller Live follows a concert-type performance where a talented cast perform Jackson hits, and the cast give an occasional narrative tribute to Jackson, highlighting the point of his career to introduce the music that follows.
For me the shining star in the musical was Cleopatra Higgins. Best known for her role in 90s band Cleopatra her voice is amazing and it seemed there was no note she could not reach.
Lead Vocalist Sean Christopher sounded, danced and looked so much like Michael Jackson it was almost spooky and Jesse Smith’s rendition of She’s Out of My Life was full of emotion and sung absolutely beautifully.
The dancers were fantastic, and the moonwalking was spot on.
All in all this was a fantastic show, full of energy, great music and a brilliant cast.
People were up out of their seats dancing and singing along to the music, and the musical left you feeling happy and uplifted.
A definite feel good musical, that stretches the vocal cords and gets those feet moving. A must see.
Thriller Live is showing at Theatre Royal Brighton until Saturday (February 8).
