AN East Worthing deputy head teacher, described as a "real superstar", has retired after more than 30 years at the school.
Denis Mitchell waved a fond farewell to students and staff at Chesswood Middle.

Mr Mitchell, who is 60, but has always told the children he is 42, began his role as deputy at the school in the late 1970s.

At the time, it was called Lyndhurst First and Middle and was based in Lyndhurst Road, until the school was divided into two and Chesswood Middle opened in Chesswood Road.

He started his teaching career in 1970 at Downsbrook Middle in Broadwater.

He said: "My years here have been wonderful and I would willingly do the same all over again.

"I have many memories. For a long time, the children have told me I used to teach their parents, but now it's stretched to grandparents."

Mr Mitchell enjoyed a farewell party at the school with his colleagues and he was presented with a bench for his garden and vouchers.

He also enjoyed playing a game of Mastermind with children. He is now looking forward to having more time for fishing.

Head teacher David Newnham said: "I have been head teacher for 23 years and Denis is, undoubtedly, the best deputy I have worked with. His is a superstar and simply the best."
