A FILM warning the elderly against the perils of employing doorstep tradesmen has been posted on a council website.

West Sussex County Council has produced the film, which tells the story of Dodgy Dave the builder and his attempt to pull a roofing scam on clued-up pensioner Mike.

Peter Evans, County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: "We decided to make this film to show people how easy it is to be taken in by a plausible trickster.

"It shows that you should never believe a so-called workman on the doorstep telling you your property needs some kind of maintenance. If you are unsure, call in someone you know is properly qualified to advise you."

The film explains that Trading Standards operates a scheme called Buy With Confidence, where customers can easily find a tradesman or company they can trust.

From the county council home page at www.westsussex.gov.uk just one click on the Trading Standards link will offer the Buy With Confidence option.
