At the beginning of the year, residents of Heene Terrace, in Worthing, were up in arms over the ripping up of lawns and flower beds fronting the imposing mid-Victorian facade.

Council contractors had just started a £60,000 make-over of the traditional and much-loved format to make way for a less labour-intensive design which wouldn't require frequent watering.

Other people also criticised the emerging new look, and now the completed job gives people a chance to give their final verdict on the scheme.

This picture, taken from the Burlington Hotel, gives a marvellous view of the reshaped lawn areas, floral attractions, drought-resistant trees and shrubs – and the seats from which to enjoy it all.

Following the vote 23 per cent of people responding chose the old-style gardens, with 76 per cent preferring the new gardens.
