BARNEY BOUTWOOD struck in injury-time as Arundel progressed past division-lower Storrington in the Sussex Senior Cup first round on Tuesday. It was far from the most enthralling match but Arundel will be pleased to have booked a spot in the next round.Following a day of torrential rain, credit ought to be paid to the groundsman who produced a superb looking pitch fit for passing. The visitors should have taken the lead in on 15 minute s and would have done so had it not been for the heroics of Gary Elliott in the home goal.Lewis Jenkins was initially denied by Elliott before he produced another fine stop to prevent Boutwood on the rebound.Frustrations began to surface and this led to a poor Joe Warner challenge on James Fernandes a minute later. The Swans forward was a little late with a tackle but the referee awarded a yellow rather than red.Storrington’s best chance of the contest came three minutes before the break.Warner’s outstretched foot made contact with a Ross Fraser cross but his effort went straight into the arms of Fernandes. The second period began in the same fashion as the first with several missed place passes.Arundel began to assert their dominance and came close once again.Swans’ were indebted to Elliot again as he pulled off a fine stop to prevent Liam Da Costa on 59 minutes. Elliott sealed a man-of-the-match performance with another fine stop 17 minutes from time.Dave Herbert received the ball with his back to goal before turning and seeing his shot saved by Elliott’s legs.Extra-time seemed inevitable but Boutwood had something to say about that on 90 minutes.Da Costa’s cross was met at the back post by Boutwood who volleyed home to ensure his side progressed.Arundel joint-boss Barry Pidgeon was pleased after his side booked a spot in round two and said: “I’m pleased to get the result as we needed it.“We couldn’t get our passing going tonight but credit must go to Storrington.“We’ve conceded some late goals recently to lose games so it was good to get one ourselves.“This was an important win for us and we need to kick on now.”Arundel host Hassocks in the league on Saturday.ARUNDEL: Fernandes; Adams, L.Da Costa, Bibb, Peake; A.Biggs, O’Hagan, R.Biggs, J.Biggs; Boutwood, Jenkins. Subs: Tipper, Thoms (Adams), Herbert (J.Biggs), Hamilton.Don’t miss out on all the latest breaking news where you live. Here are four ways you can be sure you’ll be amongst the first to know what’s going on.1) Make our website your homepage 2) Like our Facebook page 3) Follow us on Twitter4) Register with us by clicking on ‘sign in’ (top right corner).
