Brighton-based artist wins major art prize

Spokeswoman Marine Costello said: “Out of the 4,756 entries submitted for the prize, and a shortlist of 70 pieces, judges Victoria Pomery, Charles Avery and Alice Rawsthorn selected the four winning artworks. The number and quality of the artworks submitted by 1,884 artists from 72 different countries made the final choice difficult for the judges.”

The first prize of £4,000 plus a year’s supply of Derwent products went to Katie for Blue Bedchamber (Strawberry Hill House).

“This Sussex-based artist focuses on experiencing, documenting and translating the spaces where she lives and works through drawing. Effortlessly evoking a feeling of light and breeze, her winning piece represents Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham, a heritage site where she worked in 2017.”

The exhibition of all 70 artworks shortlisted for the Derwent Art Prize 2020 is available in a virtual exhibition online.
