Spokesman Luke Batchelor said: “The visual arts have been an integral part of the Glyndebourne experience since the inception of its annual summer opera festival in 1934.

“The company curates regular exhibitions of contemporary art and sculpture, many of which take place in Gallery 94, a purpose-built exhibition gallery located inside the opera house.

“The new exhibition is called Fair Ground, in reference to Rudyard Kipling’s famous 1902 poem Sussex.

“It is the first in what is expected to be an annual winter event from Gallery 94 and will celebrate the best of contemporary art in Sussex, with more than 90 paintings and works on paper from 22 artists.

“All the works will be available to buy for under £500 offering a chance to invest in emerging and established names at an affordable price.

“It follows the success of the Artist Support Pledge, founded by Sussex artist Matthew Burrows earlier this year, which saw artists post images of their affordable artworks for sale online.”

Nerissa Taysom, curator at Glyndebourne, added: ‘The title Fair Ground is taken from a musical stanza in Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem Sussex, in which he describes the county as ‘beloved over all’.

“Our hope is that this will be the first in a series of winter exhibitions championing the creative energy of artists working in this special place.

“We are launching with an online exhibition but in future years visitors will also be able to come to Glyndebourne to see the works on display in our Gallery 94.”

All of the exhibiting artists live and work in the county. They are: Sophie Abbott, Laura Andrews, Polly Baker, Becky Blair , Nick Bodimeade, Louise Body, Morag Caister, Nick Carrick, Graham Dean, Linda Felcey, Jackie Fretten, Chris Gilvan-Cartwright, Nick Bush, Alej Ez, Neil Giles, Tom Homewood, Rosie Lascelles, Rob Lyon, Tim Patrick, Richard Pelling, Julian Sutherland-Beatson and Agnes Treherne.

As part of the exhibition, Glyndebourne will be doing a special release of four new large-scale works by Nick Bodimeade to accompany each of the Glyndebourne Christmas concerts taking place at the opera house in December.

The four works will be available to view online from Friday, December 4.

The exhibition will also feature works created on-site at Glyndebourne by Polly Baker and Laura Andrews, participants of a teacher-artist residency run by Glyndebourne’s education department.

The annual scheme invites two local PGCE art & design students from the University of Brighton to spend 12 weeks engaging with Glyndebourne and exploring their own creative practice.
