Spokeswoman Hazel Connors said: “At incredibly short notice, as the UK opens up in the wake of lockdown, the Society of Designer Craftsmen is delighted to open a celebratory exhibition at Chichester’s historic Oxmarket. Staging Into The Light has lifted our spirits and we hope those of our exhibition visitors too. Bringing together exciting work from over 30 designer-makers working in contemporary crafts including textiles, ceramics, glass, wood, paper, silver and jewellery, we’ve never before put an exhibition together so swiftly.

“The Society of Designer Craftsmen is the oldest multi-craft society in the UK. Founded in 1887, William Morris was an early president and we are proud to have as members some of the finest and most respected designer makers of today.”

Dan Maier, a fellow and trustee of the Society, added: “We’re really excited to be showing our members work at The Oxmarket Gallery. Many of our makers were devastated when their regular fairs and events were cancelled this year, so when the opportunity came up at just six weeks’ notice, we zoomed into action!

“We usually plan our exhibitions at least a year in advance, with six months preparation, but with the support of our members we’ve taken this bold step with everyone rallying round, including The Oxmarket Gallery staff, to make it happen.

“We know the value to the public of engaging with the arts so wanted to make our contribution. The society aims to not only support our incredibly talented makers, but to spread the word about craft and encourage a new generation of makers. We’re so pleased to be invited to take up this opportunity by the Oxmarket Gallery and are really looking forward to meeting a new audience as we generally exhibit in London.

“With the range of work we have from textiles to ceramics and wood to glass, I’m sure there’ll be something of interest for everyone who visits. If any makers are thinking of joining the society, this is a great chance to come and meet us and see what we’re about.”

Hazel added: “The selected exhibitors have responded to the Into The Light call in a variety of ways.

“For many, whilst lockdown was challenging, it fuelled a new body of work which they are keen to share in the emerging real world.

“For others, the title promised the prospect of life returning to normal, stimulating a resurgence of their creativity.

“All have produced work to the highest standards of originality and craftmanship. The magnificent setting of Chichester’s Oxmarket Gallery forms the perfect stage for this new unveiling.

“We invite everyone to come and see the show or follow our progress online where you can find out more about individual craftspeople of the highest calibre who have come together Into The Light as this positive force.

“All work in the exhibition will be for sale and commissions undertaken. Entry is free.”

Sophie Hull, chairman of the Oxmarket Gallery, added: “We hope this is the first of annual exhibitions at Oxmarket Gallery and are confident it will be very well received.”
