Beckley Village Voice 22.11.24 [email protected]
This year I have been given access to the minutes from the original village centre in Beckley that was known as the Public Room & library. It was opened in 1905 and stood on land exactly opposite the house named Dunedin on the site where the bungalow called Freshfields is now sited in Main Street.
06.01.1925- A general committee meeting was held in the parish hall at 8.30pm. Those present were the president the Rev RA Edgell in the chair, Messrs Corke, Frennery, Smith, Henbrey, Broomfield, Stone, Wickens, Bull, Brown & F Paine hon sec. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. It was proposed by the chairman Rev RA Edgell and seconded by W Stone that the old curtains be used as a cover for the billiard table instead of going to the expense of a new cover which would cost about 18/- carried. It was also proposed by the chairman and seconded by Mr Corke that the sec get small pieces of lead fixed to the corners of the matting around the billiard table-carried. The sec complained of the Women’s institute giving notice of a social to be held in the hall on the 12th of Jan: without asking permission for the use of the same and also that they used the large room two or three days a week when they only hire the library for two and a half days a week (Tue & Thur) from 2.30 till 4.30pm. Also of Mr Baddeley applying to the (Supt of Police) for a licence for the hall without being instructed to do so . After a good deal of discussion it was proposed by Mr Frenerry & seconded by Mr Wickens that the WI could not have the hall on that date and that in future all applications must be made to the Hon Sec a week in advance at least for the hire of the hall. Carried. It was proposed by the Sec and seconded by Mr Corke that the chairman Rev RA Edgell see the hon sec of WI (Miss Tabor) and instruct her of the committee’s decision. The chairman proposed that during the remainder of the billiard handicap that the rules be strictly carried out and that the Hon sec put a notice up to that effect. Carried.

This year as a thank you for all your support at the Diamond Diva events the Divas are getting a tree erected outside the village hall. The lighting up ceremony will take place at approx. 6pm on Friday 6th December and you are all invited! The village school choir, the local Carol singers and Mrs Ham’s junior choir will be there and we can sing a few traditional carols before the tree is lit. The Divas would love it if villagers attend and maybe donate a tree decoration. There will be hot chocolate or mulled wine & mince pies available to all attendees.

Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a grower to come and get free fresh food and plants. Things for free sound a little new and strange, however, those of us lucky enough to grow food, hate throwing our excess food, plants and freshly grown produce in the compost because we have too much. Each meet up is different and of course we have changing seasons and the different foods to grow to suit them. Do try and call in.
