Preview: Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome, Stables Theatre, September 20 until 28th

MARTYRS to hypochondria and general seediness, J.K.J. and his friends George and Harris decide a jaunt up the Thames would suit them to a T in this stage adaptation of Jerome’s book.

However, as the audience will find out, when the trio set off, they can hardly predict the troubles which lie ahead, with troublesome tow ropes, unreliable weather forecasts and tins of problematic pineapple chunks causing mishap after mishap - not to mention the devastation left in the wake of J.K.J.s small fox terrier Montmorency.

In this inventive adaptation by Clive Francis, three actors play all the roles: Stewart Farmer, Rob Hustwayte and newcomer Jonathan Magnanti have been practising their boating skills all summer to ensure they are up to the task.

With its benign escapism and wonderful evocation of the late Victorian middle classes, this play hilariously captures the spirit of the age.

Tickets are £12.50 for adults and £7.50 for members, under 18s and groups. There is also £2 off the first night and Sunday price.
