College links up with orchestra

Ardingly College has announced a new two-year partnership with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

College spokeswoman Helen Madaras said: “This exciting new arrangement, which starts in September, will begin with an Orchestral Day which will not only involve Ardingly prep and senior school students but will also be opened out to schools from the area.”

LPO education and community director Patrick Bailey said: “The London Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to be working in partnership with Ardingly College to support orchestral performance and wider musical education. We hope to inspire many students through the extraordinary power of orchestral music and the joy of making music together.”

During the year there will also be coaching by members of the orchestra for a St Cecilia’s Day concert and a Concerto concert in the spring as well as a recital for younger students to encourage the uptake of instruments.

Robert Costin, director of music at Ardingly, commented: “I am delighted about the new partnership with the LPO. We already have a number of their players on our music staff but having a long-term link will really give a boost to our orchestral and instrumental playing. We are very proud to be able to attract top flight musicians to Ardingly and to bring world-class music to Sussex; for example, next year’s music@ardingly concert series features among others, Julian Lloyd Webber, John Lill and Emma Johnson.”
